DEFIANCE: The Rise Of “Atheist Chaplains”

In a recent piece from CNN titled “Atheist Chaplains Seek Recognition as Humanist Clergy” a new trend is discussed: the formal recognition of atheist and humanist chaplains. These individuals, who claim to offer "spiritual" care without acknowledging a deity, represent a troubling cultural shift.
While the article presents this change as “an effort to cater to individuals who do not identify with traditional religions,” the reality is that it fundamentally undermines biblical principles.
By elevating humanism, which denies The Father’s sovereignty, this movement seeks to replace divine guidance with human-centered narcissism.
The Rise of Atheist and Humanist Chaplains
The CNN piece reports: “Atheist and humanist chaplains are gaining recognition, marking a significant step in the evolution of spiritual care.” These chaplains, often positioned as guides for nonreligious individuals, offer spiritual support rooted in humanism—a worldview that replaces faith in God with reliance on human reason and autonomy. Humanism seeks to define morality based on human experience and reason, rather than divine revelation.
Commentary: This rise of humanist chaplains signifies a departure from God's order.
As we are shown in 1 Corinthians 2:14:
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The idea that spiritual care can be effectively provided apart from God’s Word is fundamentally flawed.
Spiritual matters cannot be understood through human reasoning alone; they require the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the truth revealed in Scripture. Any attempt to offer "spiritual" care without acknowledging God is ultimately offering a counterfeit form of guidance, which cannot bring true peace or understanding.
We’ll continue in a moment.
Humanism: A Worldview That Places Human Autonomy Above God’s Authority
The article continues:
“Humanism relies on reason, ethics, and compassion instead of faith-based doctrines.” This worldview encourages individuals to define their own values and ethics, independent of divine revelation. Humanism’s emphasis on reason and ethics detached from faith in God reflects a desire for moral autonomy that denies the authority of the Creator.
Commentary: The essence of humanism is to elevate human reason and autonomy above God’s truth, which leads to a distortion of reality.
As we are taught in Romans 1:25-27:
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
When human beings reject God’s moral law in favor of their own interpretations of right and wrong, they forsake the truth and, in effect, worship themselves.
This kind of self-centered thinking ultimately leads people further from the truth of God’s Word, as they create their own standards of morality and justice that are contrary to God’s will.
The Illusion of "Freedom" Without God
The article highlights that “Humanist chaplains will help those who may be struggling with questions about meaning, purpose, or their place in the world—without any reference to a deity.”
While this may appear to offer individuals a kind of freedom from religious constraints, it is in fact a false freedom.
Freedom from God’s guidance doesn’t lead to liberation—it leads to confusion, emptiness, and moral chaos. Without God, there is no true meaning or purpose, only fleeting attempts to define it for oneself.
Commentary: Humanism, by pushing God’s truth aside, confuses and corrupts the very nature of good and evil.
As we are taught in Isaiah 5:20:
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
The Father’s word warns against the moral inversion that humanism introduces. The freedom humanism promises is not true freedom, but a distorted version of it—one that calls evil good and good evil. In the absence of God’s law, individuals are left to navigate the world based on their own understanding, which leads to spiritual darkness.
The Church’s Role in Responding to Secularism
The article suggests that “Atheism, agnosticism, and humanism are valid spiritual belief systems" that deserve respect.
While this may sound inclusive and tolerant, it goes against the Bible’s teachings, which make it clear that there is only one path to God—through Jesus Christ. The Bible calls believers to stand firm in the truth, not to validate or embrace worldviews that contradict God’s Word. The role of the Church is not to affirm false ideologies but to stand as a pillar of truth in a world that is increasingly hostile to the Gospel.
As we are told in 2 Corinthians 6:14-15:
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?"
While the world may call for the acceptance of all belief systems as equally valid, the Bible makes it clear that righteousness and unrighteousness cannot coexist.
The Church is called to be distinct and separate from the world’s ideologies, especially those that reject the truth of God.
We’ll wrap up this week’s piece right after this.
Got issues with critters? Sick of using things that can easily make you sick or kill you?
Dr. Killigan’s is THE all-natural solution. Check out what a customer had to say about their “Six Feet Under” non-toxic insect spray:
“I bought this to get rid of the ants that built a nest in my flagstone patio and sidewalk. I have granddaughters and pets, and I didn't want to use chemicals that could make them sick if they were exposed. I've used other natural pesticides in the past with mild success but this stuff definitely does the trick! I've only had to spray one time over a month ago...still no sign of the ants returning. 10/10, will be purchasing more.”

Pulling It Together: Standing Firm in the Truth
As we reflect on the growing acceptance of atheist and humanist chaplains, it’s important to recognize that this is not just a cultural trend—it is part of a larger spiritual battle.
Humanism, by rejecting God and exalting human reason and autonomy, attempts to replace God’s truth with human wisdom. This move is a form of idolatry, putting human intellect in the place of God. For believers, the response is clear: we must stand firm in the truth of God’s Word, resisting the influence of secular ideologies that seek to undermine the Gospel.
As we are taught in Ephesians 6:11-13:
Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against worldly governors, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.
As the Church faces increasing pressure to accept humanism and secularism, we must remember that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces that seek to distort the truth.
