Be Thankful For What You’ve Got - God & Country Day Comes To White Lake
This past weekend, We Are The Watchmen Weekly was on the road at Lake Church in White Lake, North Carolina for a special morning with Lt. Governor Mark Robinson.
The morning started with a special fireside chat, featuring the Pastor of Lake Church, Cameron McGill, & Mark Robinson in a way that is truly southern: Rocking Chairs.
McGill shared some special photos, including Robinson as a 9th grader.
“I ended up giving a speech that got me to the city finals that I put together the night before,” Robinson shared.
Robinson also share the struggles and the victory his mother had in providing for the family after his father passed away.
“I owe her everything,” said Robinson.
Robinson set the stage for his discussion Sunday morning by sharing his experience - the American experience - and what our responsibilities are when it comes to protecting our freedoms.
“Whatever you wanted to wear today… a shirt that says Lake Church… or put on a neck tie with the American flag on it… put on a shirt that has the American flag on it… you were free today to do that,” said Robinson.
“There wasn’t someone monitoring your every move… not today, not yesterday, not the day before… not ever in your life has someone followed you around saying, ‘what are you saying today comrade? Have you said anything about your government today? Have you said anything that we need to put you in the gulag for?’”
“Nobody in this room has experienced that here in America.”
Then, Robinson expanded on the true source of our freedom.
“Let's talk about that concept of freedom. Let's talk about the concept of freedom for a little bit. God gave us our freedom. And I want you to think about the circumstances under which God gave us our freedom. He gave us our freedom through the death of his son, Jesus Christ. God gave his only begotten son to the world as a sacrifice to give you your freedom,” Robinson shared.
“And here's the thing, He knew from the very beginning. He knew what Adam was going to do. He knew what Moses was going to do. He knew what King David was going to do. He knew what was going to happen when Pontius Pilate stood up and said, who shall I free this day? This blameless man or this killer?
He knew the people would choose to kill him and send his son to death. And he still allowed it to happen to give you your freedom. How many of us would do that? You know, I told somebody one time God destroyed the world one time with a flood because there was a wickedness.”
Robinson then talked with the audience about the founding fathers.
“You see, our founders knew that. Our founders knew that our freedom came from God. On July 4, 1776, the men who founded this country told the king that we were free. Whether he liked it or not. No matter what happened. That's why we celebrate that day.
It was our literal declaration of independence by God. Not by man. Not by bullets or bayonets. But by God. Because those founders wrote in that document, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator certain unalienable rights that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,’” said Robinson.
“You see, they weren't some weak, spineless beggars who went to the king and said, ‘Please, can we be free?’ They looked the most powerful king on earth right in the eye. And they knew what they were doing by signing that document. They were signing their death warrant. Many of them died in poverty. Many of them died at the hands of torture, lost everything they had because they were willing to sign that document that says, no matter what you say, we are free people.”
Things To Ponder
As you watch this speech, please keep this note from our publishers from last week’s edition of the newsletter in mind:
As we head back to our 2nd home, Lake Church in White Lake, NC to spend time with North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, we’re thinking about everything that’s at stake - Freedom, The American Dream that a Constitutional Republic affords us, and what our responsibilities are.
With the rapid pace of life, what feels forgotten oftentimes is our responsibility… the responsibility to preserve, protect, and defend the freedoms that those who came before us did on our behalf.
See, they understood that they weren’t owed anything, nor did they “own” the American experience.
Instead, they understood the responsibility of stewardship - preserving all of this for future generations.
This is critical for believers to understand, as we were given power and dominion over all things on the earth… acting as stewards of God’s creation.
As we’re told in Genesis 1:26:
26 Furthermore God said, Let us make man in our image according to our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heaven, and over the beasts, and over all the earth, and over everything that creepeth and moveth on the earth.
It is also critical to understand the role of being a Watchman… and a shepherd.
As we are told in Jeremiah 23:1-2:
1.“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord.
2. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord.
And in Zechariah 11:17:
“Woe to the worthless shepherd,
who deserts the flock!
May the sword strike his arm and his right eye!
May his arm be completely withered,
his right eye totally blinded!”
Note that God speaks directly THREE TIMES in Jeremiah 23:1-2 about the responsibility of leaders (shepherds).
That’s important.
If you are in a leadership position or you have influence with others whether public or private, you can be sure of two things:
Satan hates if you are focused on biblical principles and will throw the ‘kitchen sink’ at you to try and derail you. People (the world) will dislike you and you will suffer worldly losses;
God will hold you to an even higher standard based on your responsibility, and your rewards or punishment will be eternal.
